The jackpot for the first drawing of the new year for Mega Millions is expected to be somewhere in the neighbourhood of $785 million, making it the fourth-largest payout in the history of the game.
The jackpot for Friday’s drawing, which was anticipated to be $685 million, was not won, but a ticket purchased in Ohio did win the $1 million second-tier reward.
The Mega Millions organisation issued a press statement on Saturday stating that the jackpot has ultimately increased to more than one billion dollars in each of the three instances in which the grand total has made it above the $700 million barrier.
According to the statement, the first person to win the Mega Millions jackpot and become a billionaire did so in October 2018, when a player from South Carolina claimed the $1.537 billion reward. This jackpot continues to hold the title of the largest ever awarded in the history of the game.
The List Wire reports that the Powerball grand prize that was won by a player in California in November 2022 and was valued $2.04 billion is the lottery jackpot record holder for the biggest amount ever won.
In July 2022, a Mega Millions player from Des Plaines, Illinois, brought home a reward of $1.337 billion, while in January 2021, a player from Oakland County, Michigan, began their new year with a jackpot worth $1.05 billion. Both of these players were located in the United States.
Other winners from Friday’s drawing include the purchasers of 82 tickets that were sold all throughout the nation and matched four white balls in addition to the Mega Ball. These winners each received a reward that ranged from $10,000 to $30,000 for their efforts. The drawing that took place on Friday resulted in a total of 2,776,599 winning tickets, and the rewards ranged from $2 to $1 million.
Since the last prize was claimed in October, the Mega Millions website reports that there have been 22 draws held since then. This big prize, which had a total value of $502 million, was split between two winners: one was located in San Jose, California, while the other was located in Fort Myers, Florida.
