The Mega Millions jackpot in Maine might have been won with a ticket

The individual who purchased the winning Mega Millions jackpot ticket at a shop in Lebanon already beat chances of one in 302.6 million to one.

They would have been much lucky had they purchased the ticket just a mile or two away.

Because of Maine's income tax, the winner of the life-changing award will take home a lower sum than they would in New Hampshire.

However, they are lower than they would be in Massachusetts, which is just 35 miles away.

Voters in Massachusetts adopted a "millionaires tax" that went into force this year.

The Mega Millions jackpot winner from the previous week may choose to receive the entire amount of the reward.

However, federal income taxes consume a significant portion of it.

The total payment down to around $816.7 million over the course of 30 years.

This is before the application of any state taxes.
