The jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery for January 21 was offering a top prize of $376 million with a cash-value option of $259.8 million but did anyone win the big one?
The numbers drawn were 38, 45, 46, 55 and 67 for the white balls, while the yellow Mega Ball was 18, and the Megaplier was 2, according to the Mega Millions website.
Once again, no one took home the biggest prize on offer by matching all six balls, although there was one big winner from Georgia whose ticket matched the five white balls.
Their $1 million prize could have been doubled if they had played the Megaplier for an extra dollar.
There were 23 winners of the $10,000 prize, whose tickets matched four white balls and the Mega Ball. Six of those tickets had the Megaplier to double their money.
Meanwhile, 458 winners matched four white balls to get the $500 prize, with 87 of them playing the Megaplier. In total, the January 21 drawing produced over 855,000 winning tickets of at least $2.
With no winners of the jackpot since October 22, the top prize now grows to $396 million which if won, would be the fifteenth largest jackpot in the 20-year history of the game.
There is a cash option of $273 million. Since the jackpot was last won, there have been 33 tickets worth $1 million or more.
Mega Millions said on its website that January is typically a big month for jackpots.
It was 12 months ago when a $1.05 billion jackpot was won by a four-player lottery club in Michigan on January 22, 2021. There were also other big winners in January in 2018 ($451 million in Florida) and 2019 ($437 million in New York).
How To play
One of the country’s most popular lotteries, the Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. ET.
Five white balls are taken from balls numbered 1 through 70 and a yellow Mega Ball is taken from a set numbered from 1 to 25.
Tickets cost $2 per play and for an extra dollar in most states, there is the Megaplier option, which can increase non-jackpot prizes between two and five times.
If there is no jackpot winner, the money is added to the top prize for the following drawing. Once the jackpot is won, the top prize is reset to $20 million.
Tickets can be bought in 45 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, they can not be bought in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.
The odds of winning with a $2 Mega Millions ticket are one in 303 million. See the Mega Millions website for more information.
